# As a child, I remember my dad teaching me how to play poker. He would buy me chips and we would play for hours in the living room. I would pretend to be in Vegas and he would tell me stories about all of his adventures gambling in Sin City. One day when we were playing, my dad got a phone call from work and had to leave the house for an appointment. Not wanting our game to be interrupted, he told me not to worry about him and just keep playing on the couch without him watching over my shoulder any more than I needed. He told me he would return later and we could pick up where we left off. He didn't come back and I was bored too. I did not want to stop playing but I did not know what else to do with myself because my dad was gone. I began to play the game like he played it, by myself, sitting on the couch, hunched over the cards. The hours passed and before long I realized that my dad had never showed up back at home; he must have been called away for an emergency. Then I started really feeling bad about myself and lost interest in playing cards altogether. The next day, I packed a bag and headed out to meet my dad. The roads were clear and I drove frantically, the traffic seeming endless as if time was crawling by at a snail's pace. At last I arrived at our empty house. There was no ice machine in the kitchen and it was empty of furniture as well as of my dad. I figured he must have been called away at work again and left me stranded without warning. Unsure what else to do, I grabbed a book from the bookshelf and climbed back into bed to wait for him to return. Hours later, when no one showed up, I grew restless and decided to explore our property for any sign of him. I walked around the perimeter, inspecting the yard and all the outbuildings, looking for his car or perhaps a clue as to where he went. I was puzzled by how large our property seemed to be and how many rooms there were in our house. One of them had a light on and I peeked inside; it was a bedroom with toys scattered about. I headed back outside and found that in my absence, several trees in our backyard had been cut down and workmen were busy replacing our underground sprinkler system. Curious where my dad might have gone, I decided to check out the outbuildings more carefully, hoping that maybe he had left something behind that would tell me where he had gone. I wandered around the barns, yards and outhouses, but did not find him or any sign of his whereabouts, until I stumbled back into the house. It was dark by then and the kitchen was lit up by an open refrigerator. I checked my watch to find that it was past my bedtime. I decided to climb into the box that had been set out for me on a little table in front of our refrigerator instead of going back to my bedroom. The next day I woke up in the box, which had no lid on it so that I could eat whatever food inside whenever I wanted.
